Embratel says it has begun a fresh attempt at partnering with Net Serviços (ex-Globo Cabo) to obtain alternative access to the last mile. According to Purificación Carpinteyro, Embratel?s vice president of marketing and regulatory affairs, talks recently resumed after an ?unexplained? interruption by Net Serviços a year ago.
The explanation offered by Purificación Carpinteyro relates to rumors circulating at the time that the three incumbent local exchange carriers were about to form a consortium to take over the pay-TV company and that the move was designed solely to obstruct negotiations with the long-distance carrier.
Cable networks could offer Embratel access to the last mile for the residential and SoHo segments, she believes, although they aren?t as extensive as telephone networks.
