The Culture Ministry continues to negotiate with different sectors in its campaign to have Ancine, the national film agency, subordinated to it. The issue will eventually be decided by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Office of the Presidential Chief of Staff.
The latest round of talks was held between ministry officials and 22 state culture secretaries at a meeting in Brasília on Thursday, July 3. The states signed a manifesto backing the Culture Ministry?s control of Ancine with the claim that this is a prerequisite for ?an effective cultural policy? and as ?an instrument of national development?.
The states supporting the ministry in this campaign are Acre, Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Paraná, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Sergipe, Tocantins, and the Federal District.
