Digital TV
There is no sense in competing with mobile telcos, says Bob Seidel of CBS

Bob Seidel, vice president of engineering and advanced technology at CBS, addressed a seminar at TV Cultura in São Paulo Wednesday, July 17. He told representatives of Brazilian broadcasters and ATSC about digital terrestrial television in his home country. CBS isn?t interested in mobile transmission of DTV, he said, basically because it sees little prospect of profitability. This view is generally held by U.S. broadcasters, for whom there?s no point in trying to compete with mobile telephony companies. ?We?ll have even less chance with the advent of third-generation technology, which enables video downloads to mobiles,? he said. CBS will invest some 50 million US dollars in DTV production and transmission equipment this year. It expects to invest even more in future as it digitizes its entire network infrastructure.
