Approval is beginning to look certain for News Corp?s takeover of Hughes in Brazil as well as the U.S. News controls Sky and Hughes controls DirecTV. The latest material development in Brazil was permission for Neo TV to be heard in the proceedings. The programming purchasing club is now examining the papers and will contribute its views and demands soon.
Meanwhile, the U.S. authorities are expected to announce a decision shortly. In a conference call with investors last week, Rupert Murdoch said he hoped the deal would be approved this year rather than in the first quarter of 2004, as initially expected. Mr Murdoch is the controlling shareholder and CEO of News Corp.
