The board of Anatel approved Wednesday, August 20, the sale of a DBS license to TV Modelo Paulista. One of the shareholders is a well-known evangelical minister, Pastor R.R. Soares (Romildo Ribeiro Soares), who leases slots from at least two broadcast TV networks (Bandeirantes and Gazeta) to air religious programs. The company already owns a station (TV Cidade Modelo) in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, and ten relay stations that retransmit programs put out by Rede Internacional de Televisão. It also owns a radio station in Rio de Janeiro (Rádio Relógio Federal) and another in Vespasiano, Minas Gerais (Radio Metropolitana). The group follows the ideological orientation of Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus.
According to sources consulted by PAY-TV News, the license will be used to set up a commercial DBS network targeting middle- and low-income households.
Ambitious project
The project submitted to Anatel says the license will be used to offer services to a specific niche market formed by the evangelical community. The DBS distributor will transmit 36 channels including audio and video. The plan, which doesn?t have to be carried out exactly as filed with Anatel, calls for investment of 18 million US Dollars with the aim of reaching 150,000 subscribers in the first year and 900,000 by the end of the fifth year. It also specifies that one of the channels only will be religious. The others will focus on culture and varieties. All broadcast channels will also be carried. The satellite used will be NewSkies.
