Mauro Holzman, president of Clube dos Treze, Brazil?s premier soccer league, announced Monday, April 28, that affiliates of Net Brasil sold 170,000 pay-per-view packages of this year?s national soccer championship in the first four weeks ? that?s 74% of the 230,000 packages sold in the whole of 2002, and it doesn?t include sales of individual matches. The championship lasts until December 14, so plenty more sales are certainly in the pipeline. The strategy this year has been to sell many more matches as pay-TV exclusives. The broadcast networks won?t have enough advertising revenue to pay as much, Mauro Holzman explained, not least because the championship lasts longer this year, with has more matches. The strategy seems to be paying off. The May issue of PAY-TV magazine, out next week, has a detailed report on the consequences of this promising new strategy.
