Fox and Sky Brazil have begun a collaborative project to restore Brazilian motion pictures archived with Cinemateca Brasileira. They?re bankrolling the Amigos do Cinema project without recourse to tax incentives. Abel Puig, director of Fox and National Geographic in Brazil, says the goal is to ?preserve Brazil?s audiovisual memory". In June we will exhibit a restored copy of Proezas de Satanás na Vila do Leva-e-Traz, a 1967 feature directed by Paulo Gil Soares?. Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa can be heard on the sound track; both were then unknown musicians just starting their illustrious careers. The original was completely ruined, Abel Puig says, but a copy was found at the Paris Cinematheque and that is what has been restored.
Abel Puig says he?s also excited about the audience ratings for the Toyota Libertadores Cup soccer matches aired by Fox. These ratings owe a good deal to the strong showing of four Brazilian clubs in the tournament (Paysandu, Grêmio, Corinthians, and Santos). There will be more sporting attractions, he adds: Fox has signed up to air the Sudamerica Cup (formerly Mercosur), in which 12 Brazilian clubs will take part. This tournament takes place in the second half.
